Who’s Your Daddy
A sermon for Christ’s Church at Monticello January 21, 2007
Gregg A. Nydegger
1 John 3:4-10 (NIV)
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away
our sins. And in him is no sin.
6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one
who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray.
He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the
devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God
appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9 No one who
is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he
cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
10 This is how we know who the children of God are and
who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is
not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Dear children, don’t let anyone lead you astray
Continued sin and Christianity are incompatible!
Everyone who sins
‘Everyone who keeps on sinning’
‘keeps on sinning’ (v6)
‘continues to sin’ (v6)
‘will continue to sin (v9)
‘he cannot go on sinning’ (v9)
1 John 1:8-10 (NIV)
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and
the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be
a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Everyone who sins breaks the law;
in fact, sin is lawlessness.
Matthew 5:17-18 (NIV)
17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or
the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear,
not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means
disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
James 1:22-25 (NIV)
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.
Do what it says.
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what
it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately
forgets what he looks like.
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law
that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has
heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.
The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
John 1:29 (NIV)
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Hebrews 9:26 (NIV)
26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since
the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at
the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Romans 6:22 (NIV)
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have
become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result
is eternal life.
Romans 6:11 (NIV)
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive
to God in Christ Jesus.
In Him there is no sin
Hebrews 7:26 (NIV)
26 Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless,
pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
1 Peter 1:18-19 (NIV)
18 For you know that it was not with perishable things
such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life
handed down to you from your forefathers,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without
blemish or defect.
No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.
No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
1 John 2:4 (NIV)
4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what
he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains
in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!
1 Corinthians 2:10b-12 (NIV)
10b The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things
of God.
11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except
the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts
of God except the Spirit of God.
12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the
Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given
us.
1 John 2:1 (NIV)
1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will
not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father
in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He
who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning
from the beginning.
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the
devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor
is anyone who does not love his brother.
He who does
